Pet rabbit sales promotion in Singapore - best dressed and racing contests
62The Chinese zodiac sign for Lunar New Year 2011 is Rabbit. In Singapore, the bunny has become a topic for debate lately, as a result of promotional rabbit shows organized by some major pet stores.
In Singapore, there seems to be a trend to buy rabbits as pets during Year of the Rabbit. Some people have the misconception that the bunnies can bring them luck since it is their zodiac year.
Marketing gimmicks
Some pet shops, riding on the Rabbit Year to increase rabbit sales, have been using marketing gimmicks to attract customers. Some of the promotions include best dressed rabbit show and rabbit racing contest. Unsolicited mobile phone message advertisements were also used to promote sales of pets.
Concerns over welfare of the rabbits
The House Rabbit Society of Singapore (HRSS) highlighted two events that cause unnecessary stress to the bunnies, namely the Best Dressed Rabbit contest and the Racing Rabbits competition. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), “dressing up rabbits in clothing could constrict their movement, and make the animals panic. Panic could even cause them to go into shock and die”.
Some people have also aired their concerns over the dressing up and racing activities as these can result in severe stress and injury for the animals.
Contrary views of others
However, the pet exhibition organizers and some members of the public hold contrary views. Some says the furry animals seem happy and are eating and sleeping well and did not appear to be stressed.
Rabbit awareness event
SPCA and HRSS will be organizing a rabbit awareness event in end January.

Interesting! Some business owners would really do anything just to improve their sales even if it means putting the rabbits or some animals into great risks.
