Historical event leading to the gift
The Portuguese have settled in Macau since the early 16th century. Macau officially became a Chinese territory under Portuguese administration in 1887.
On 20 December 1999, Portugal returned the sovereignty of Macau to the People’s Republic of China.
To commemorate this important historic moment, China presented to Macau a magnificent Golden Lotus Flower In Full Bloom sculpture.
Macau is now a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China. It consists of the Macau Peninsula itself and the islands of Taipa and Coloane.
Description of sculpture
The Golden Lotus is a gilded bronze statue in the form of a full bloom golden lotus flower. It weighs 6.5 tons and is 6 meters high. Diameter of the flower is 3.6 meters at maximum.
It comprises of stem, petals and pistil, with a total of 16 components. Three layers of red granite in the shape of leaf formed the base of the flower, signifying the Macau Peninsula, Taipa Island and Coloane Island.
At the bottom of the sculpture, there is a plaque with the following words inscribed in Chinese:-

Location of the sculpture
This elegant statue is situated in a fairly large piazza – the Golden Lotus Square (also known as Lotus Square). Nearby are the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf and the Tourism Activities Centre.
Flag-raising Ceremony

Every morning at the Golden Lotus Square, six Special Police Constables conduct the 8 o’clock flag-raising ceremony to the accompaniment of the PRC’s National Anthem. Lowering of the flag is at 6.00 p.m. but without the broadcasting of the National Song.
There is also the Annual Flag-raising Ceremony at the Golden Lotus Square on the National Day of the People’s Republic of China and on the Anniversary of Macau’s Return to China.

The Golden Lotus Flower In Full Bloom symbolizes the everlasting prosperity and success of Macau.
This beautifully crafted statue is one of the main tourist attractions in Macau.
